Who needs an employment permit to work in Ireland?
Most people from outside the European Economic Area, the UK and Switzerland need an employment permit to work in Ireland. Some people don't, for example those who already hold Stamp 4 permission.
Do I need a job offer before I apply?
Yes. For a General Employment Permit or a Critical Skills Employment Permit you need a job offer from an employer in Ireland, and the job and salary must meet the Department's rules. If you're not sure whether your offer qualifies, the free assessment will tell you.
How long does an application take?
It depends on the permit type and on the Department's workload at the time. DETE publishes the dates it is currently processing on its website. We'll tell you what to expect when we assess your case, and follow up if an application is delayed.
Can my family join me in Ireland?
Often, yes. Critical Skills permit holders can apply for their spouse or partner and children to join them. General Employment Permit holders can apply too, but must meet income requirements, for example a gross income above €30,000 in the previous year to bring a spouse or partner. These rules were updated on 12 June 2026, so we'll check your situation against the current rules.
Can I change employer once I have a permit?
Usually after nine months. General Employment and Critical Skills permit holders can change employer once nine months have passed since their first permit started, staying within the same type of occupation. A new permit has to be issued before you start the new job. Earlier changes are only possible in exceptional cases, such as redundancy.
